Oregon Federal Lunch Program

We all know the importance of food security. Being privileged enough to have three full meals a day is a blessing. Unfortunately, not every household is able to afford such luxuries. According to a report by the USDA in the U.S., “one in seven households in Oregon were “food insecure” between 2014-16.” A young child without food security is less likely to be able to concentrate on their school studies, and may harbor feelings of anxiety as a a result. Furthermore, as the child grows older they may suffer from deficiencies due to lack of proper nutrition.

It’s undoubtedly very important for children to eat well. This is why there a programs in place in Oregon that allow children easier access to healthy nutrition. These programs “work with community partners including the Oregon Department of Education, to publicize and expand participation in these nutrition programs.” Children who are homeless, fall below 185% federal poverty level, or receive SNAP benefits can obtain free school meals through this program.

There is also the School Breakfast Program, which provides federal reimbursements for those who implement nonprofit breakfast programs within their schools. The partners of Hunger-Free Oregon is currently collaborating with Oregan Department of Education to advertise and bring greater attention to the SBP. This way, more families will become aware of the programs in place to help reduce food insecurity among children.

Through these programs and efforts, less children will suffer from the physical, mental, and emotional repercussions that come with food insecurity. By having the chance to eat regular meals consistently children are more likely to pay attention in class and complete their school assignments. The stress of poverty and malnutrition will lessen so they can focus on their studies. Childrens’ parents will also have a burden lifted off knowing that their children are at least able to eat proper meals in school through the implementation of these programs.
