MAKING POSTS

Canva

Canva is a website where users can make engaging graphic design projects ranging from birthday cards to animated end cards for videos. We will use it primarily to make visuals for social media posts, such as pictures or videos. It can be a bit of a learning curve at first, but don’t worry; Canva was made to be easy to navigate. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a team member if you need assistance making posts on Canva.

You will get access to all Canva Pro features through the AHA Social Media Team. In order to gain access, you must accept the Canva Team invitation sent to your email.

Although Canva is a useful resource, if you already have graphic design or social media marketing experience and prefer to use a different tool or program (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Figma) to make posts, that is completely fine. Just let the team know so that we are aware.

Alternatively, you do not need to make a design on Canva for every post. For example, this post highlights donors that helped out with folding origami for International Day of Older Person’s Day 2022, presented as just a set of pictures. This will be specified in the posting schedule.

Introduction to Canva

Below is a brief introduction to how the AHA Social Media Team layout looks like. Highlighted below in yellow is the Canva Team “AHA Social Media” (denoted by the letters “AS”) that you are a part of. Please ensure you are in this Team (and that you are not currently in the page of another Canva Team that you may be a part of), otherwise you may not have access to the Canva Pro features being in a Canva Team provides.

You do not need to make designs on Canva from scratch (however, feel free to if you want!). There is a “Templates” tab (highlighted in green above) which you can use to edit and use to make social media posts.

The template categories that are most relevant to AHA are under “Social media” (highlighted in yellow below), but feel free to explore all templates. The blue box below shows a small fraction of the many templates you can use, purely for an Instagram post alone. You can also use the search bar at the top to search for more specific templates (e.g., templates related to donations, holidays, etc.,), as well as filter templates by preferred style, theme, color, and more if you scroll down on the left sidebar (highlighted in the green box below).

You can edit the text, images, shapes, positioning, colours, and even the animation of all templates you use; images and graphics are also provided by Canva (although in some cases you may need to use images provided by AHA).

Here is a 6-minute tutorial on how to make and upload a square Instagram post on Canva. The Canva site also has its own set of tutorials. The lessons are split into short digestible chunks, each lesson usually teaching you one function. We recommend watching the tutorials on Getting Started and Designing with Canva to learn the basics. Of course, tutorials aside, much can be learned from hands-on experience and exploration, which you will be gaining by volunteering with AHA!

Sharing Canva Designs to the AHA Social Media Team

A confusing aspect of Canva is that, although the Canva Pro features are granted to you on behalf of the Canva Team subscription, the designs you make are usually private to you until you share it with the Team and the associated AHA account. For this reason, it is important that you know how to share Canva designs with the AHA Social Media Team

Here is a short 1-minute Canva tutorial on how to share your design with Team members. Please share your design with two people: the AHA Social media Team, and the Asha Hope Amanaki account; you can do this by copy-and-pasting or typing these names in the search bar. If needed, click on the icon on the right of the person or team you are sharing the Canva design with and change the access to “edit,” indicated by a pen icon (highlighted in yellow in the image below). In the end, your “Share this design” box should look like this (with you being the Owner):

If you are unsure if you have shared your Canva design to the AHA Social Media Team or not, please always make sure to see who you shared your Canva design with!

Projects Page: Folders

We use folders to organize our designs on Canva! You can access all your folders (highlighted in blue in the image below) in the “Projects” page on the left sidebar (highlighted in yellow in the image below). The most relevant folder is the “Social Media – Assets” folder (highlighted in blue in the image above). In this folder, you will find the following:

  1. Standard Templates folder: This is where you will find designs that line-up with certain themes (e.g., Volunteer Spotlight, Donation progress, promotion); if you are scheduled to post according to a theme that lines up with one of these templates, feel free to edit a standard template design. For reference, below is the “AHA Volunteer Spotlight” design template used for three different posts:

  1. Gallery folder: Here you will find sub-folders that contain images and designs that pertain to specific events or themes. Feel free to use these in any way that is fitting (e.g., You post images on their own or integrate them into your own designs; you can edit other people’s designs to fit a theme).

Please also feel free to explore the other folders in order to familiarize yourself with Canva and AHA’s events and programs!

Projects Page: Designs, Images, and Videos

Also in the “Projects” Page are three other tabs:

  1. Designs: highlighted in yellow below, this is where you will find all the designs that have been made using/in Canva.

  1. Images & Videos: highlighted in green above, this is where you will find all the images and videos that have been uploaded to Canva, but are not implemented as part of a Canva design (or edited with a software other than Canva). As such, you will most likely find raw videos and images in these tabs. You will have to download these raw files into your personal device (e.g., computer, laptop, phone) and upload them while making a Canva design.

A note on uploading images to Canva Designs: The image below shows what the Canva editor looks like. Highlighted in yellow below (left-side) is the “Uploads” section, and in order to upload a file, you click the “Upload files” button (highlighted in blue below) and select the appropriate file from your device. From there, you can edit and use it in your selected design or template as you wish!

If you are having trouble finding designs, images, or videos shared to the AHA Social Media Team by others, please ensure that the Projects filter bar (highlighted in yellow below) is displaying “All projects” or “Shared with you” (highlighted in blue below).

Posting on Different Platforms

You have two options on how to upload social media posts:

  1. log into each AHA social media account individually, and post each post as if you were using your personal account. Please refer to the “PLATFORMS” section on making posts on each platform.
  2. Posting through Canva

Although which option you choose depends on preference, it is generally easier to post through Canva, as you don’t need to save the design to your device or desktop before uploading it to the designated platforms. Here is a 1-minute Canva tutorial on how to connect Canva to different social media platforms.

The first account you want to connect Canva to is AHA’s “Facebook page”; the second account you want to connect Canva to is AHA’s “Instagram Business” account, which you should be able to connect through the previously connected Facebook page. When connecting, please ensure you use the same Facebook account that you shared with AHA, otherwise this process will not work.

When posting, please post on all three platforms at around the same time. Please refer to the video under the “Volunteer Resources” in the “Folders” Tab on the AHA Social Media Team page; it is a tutorial on how to post through different connected Canva accounts. Alternatively, here is Canva’s page on sharing designs on different social media platforms.

Unfortunately, you will need to post from the LinkedIn site directly, as Canva links your personal LinkedIn account rather than the AHA LinkedIn page, and thus cannot be posted from Canva. Likewise, you must post Instagram Reels and Stories (and similar post types like Facebook Stories) directly from the designated platform themselves because these types of posts are not supported by Canva. For Instagram in particular, Canva does not allow you to upload a post containing multiple images (Carousel posts), although this is possible when posting to Facebook, so you will need to post Carousel posts directly from Instagram.

Pre-scheduling Posts

We recommend that you post around the same time every week for the sake of consistency and professionalism. However, we recognize this is not always possible. Fortunately, Canva has a built-in feature that allows you to schedule posts directly from the Canva editor, outlined in this page. We are not currently using the Canva Content Planner, so please refer to the second section “Scheduling posts from the Canva editor.” However, as stated in that page, as of right now, you can only schedule each (one) Canva post to one social media account.

Further, as stated in the preceding sub-section, Any post that cannot be posted from Canva, outlined in the paragraph above, and hence cannot be scheduled, needs to be posted directly from the respective platforms itself.

Alternatively, you can also schedule posts to the Meta Business Suite (on desktop) on AHA’s Facebook page. This page outlines how to do this. You can also read the below.

Below is an image of the AHA Facebook page. On the left-side bar, highlighted in yellow below is the section you must click to access the Meta Business Suite.

The Meta Business Suite “Home” page should look like the below. Click the blue “Create Post” button, outlined in red below to start a new post. Also, some other post options that may be useful are the “Create reel” and “Create story,” highlighted in yellow below, which you can access by clicking the “More” button. The Meta Business Suite allows you to schedule all three types of posts, which is more ideal than Canva, which only allows you to schedule normal posts.

Once you are in the “Create post” page, it will look like the image below. Since post creation is not the focus of this section, we will only go over it briefly.

On the left half of the page is where you can upload all your photos and videos (in the “Media” section) and write your captions (in the “Post details” section). You can choose whether to post on both AHA’s Facebook and AHA’s Instagram page, or just one of the platforms (if needed for whatever reason) by adjusting the “Post to” options at the top (not pictured) and checking the desired platforms. Also, you can write different captions for the same Facebook and Instagram post (again, if needed) under the “Post details” section by activating the “Customise post for Facebook and Instagram” toggle, highlighted in blue below.

On the right, outlined by the red box, is the post preview section. It shows what your post will look like to your audience on Facebook and Instagram. You can switch between the Facebook preview and Instagram preview at the top.

Most importantly, in the “Scheduling options” section there are three options listed.

  1. Publish now: the post will publish immediately after clicking this button.
  2. Schedule: highlighted in yellow below, clicking this will allow you to schedule what date and time the post is published. This will allow you to pre-schedule posts.
  3. Save as draft: if you are not ready to publish or schedule a post, and want to come back to it later, you may save it as a draft to work on it at a later time. If you try to exit the “Create post” page without publishing or scheduling a post, they may ask if you want to save the post as a draft; this is generally a good idea to do!

You can view which posts are scheduled for when in the “Planner” section on the left-sidebar, highlighted in yellow below. It is displayed in a calendar layout. You can also go back to posts you pre-scheduled before and change its details in the “Planner” page.

For more details on managing and scheduling account posts on the Meta Business Suite content planner, refer to this page.

Once again, although both of AHA’s Facebook and Instagram accounts are connected on the Meta Business Suite, AHA’s LinkedIn is not, and as such, you will need to post directly from LinkedIn every time you need to post there. Although LinkedIn does have a feature to schedule posts, outlined in this page, this feature may not be available to all users because it just came out in November 2022 and may still be undergoing testing. (However, if it is available to you, feel free to use it!). Further, as stated before, since we cannot connect AHA’s LinkedIn account to Canva, we cannot take advantage of Canva’s post scheduling features either.

Finally, whenever you decide to schedule a post, please make sure to double check its contents to make sure everything is in place, as well as make sure the time and date you scheduled is correct! (e.g., scheduled for 10am, not 10pm)

Brand Colours, Logo, and Fonts

AHA’s Brand colours, logo(s), and fonts are listed under Tools > Brand (highlighted in yellow).

The logo we use most often is the circular one shown in the first page of this document. Usually, you would want to place it in the upper right corner of each design; the size should be small enough to not intrude on the main design, but large enough to be indefatigable.

The brand colours are #11141a #e9584e #63b8db #f59f00 and #ffffff. Please conform to these standards in creating the visuals of a post whenever you can, although we allow a fair amount of creative liberty. Below are some examples that use some or all of our brand elements.

UPDATED: Ordering of Brand Colours

To maintain consistency, we recommend posting to a set colour scheme order of:1)#e9584e → 2 #63b8db → 3)#f59f00. Before making your post, you should be aware of the colour scheme of the previous post, and then make your post (that is after it) the next colour in the above order. For example, if the previous post was red (#e9584e), you should focus your post around the blue brand colour (#63b8db); if the previous post was yellow (#f59f00), you should focus your post around the red brand colour (#e9584e).

Below is an example (on our Instagram page) of what this ordering should look like; the posts are numbered in the upper right of each post to indicate the order of posting, and the letters on lower right of each post indicates the colour scheme it centers around (Yellow → Red → Blue):

Some notes on colour ordering:

  1. Post 1, 4, 7, and 10 are Yellow. Post 2, 5, 8 and 11 are Red. Post 3, 6, 9 and 12 are Blue. The numbers in each colour set follow a pattern of +3 to indicate this ordering (1+3 = 4; 4 + 3 = 7).
  2. You do not need to use the exact saturation or lightness of the brand colours. For example, you may use darkened versions of the brand colours to allow more contrast and readability with white (or light) text. Please do not change the hue of the brand colours unless absolutely necessary.
  3. The brand colour does not need to be the background colour. You just need to include the specific brand colour in a way that lets the viewer see that it is the focus of the post. There are several ways to do this
    1. Make it the background colour.
    2. Make it the main colour of the text.
    3. Use blocks of the main colour to organise information.
    4. For image-focused posts, create a border using the main colour.
    5. Use the main colour minimally, but make sure it still stands out by pairing it with neutral colours (e.g., white, black, greys, ivory, pale colours)
    6. Try following a monochromatic colour scheme of the main colour: (e.g., #e9584e ,#F1A6A0 , #FADAD8.)
  4. If you are having trouble making a design that pertains to the colour scheme, please refer to these templates made by other volunteers:
    1. Volunteer positions template (post 1, 2, 3)

    1. Muted colour scheme – text posts template (post 4, 5, 6)

    1. Coloured frame – square images

    1. Delivery template 3 – two photos

Caption Guidelines

The same person who posted the posting schedule will either:

  1. Provide a caption and hashtags in the Weekly Calendar that pertains to each post’s theme. You are free to adjust its contents as long as you have a reason for doing so (e.g., to better fit the theme, it will gain more traction, it lines up with our current goals and events).
  2. Not provide a caption and hashtags in the Weekly Calendar, and may only state the theme of each post. In this case, you are responsible for writing the caption for your assigned post.

Here are some guidelines on writing captions

  • Introduce the main body (The part that corresponds to the attached picture/visual) early on. Ideally, put it at the very top so that people see it right away
  • Try opening with an eye-catching quote or fun fact if the main body does not seem engaging
  • Feel free to use emojis to brighten up the caption, but note that in some instance this may not be the norm on the platform, like LinkedIn
  • Use language that is plain and easy to understand (considering showing it to a younger family member or someone who is unfamiliar with social media)

Updated Caption Guidelines (Jan 2024)

The general structure of captions consists of specific sections, but may vary depending on the purpose or highlighted event of each post. As for the format, sections are usually separated with a new empty line, or a new line with just a dash (for clarity). These sections are as follows:

  1. Hook: (if applicable) an eye-grabbing quote or fact that’s meant to draw the viewer in.
  2. Main section(s): indicates the theme of the post, which can range from details of a community fridge delivery, recapping an event, highlighting the achievements done by one of our volunteers, or celebrating and describing the importance of a commemorative or celebratory day (e.g., International Volunteer Day/Week, International Day of Education, International Women’s Day, etc.,)
  3. Related or important link(s): (if applicable) a brief description of any links that are pertinent to the theme; for example, a food delivery update may include a link where the viewer can donate, or an event recap post may include a link for anyone interested in volunteering for AHA’s future events. Viewers may also be referred to the host’s social media accounts instead.
  4. Program and/or event description(s): (if applicable) a brief description of the program and/or the event (when, where, who the hosts are, etc.,) the post is outlining.
  5. Image credits: (if applicable) A brief thank you to those who provided the images for the post. This is usually not mentioned if they are the focus of the post already (e.g., a food delivery volunteer, a volunteer highlight).
  6. Tagline: our tagline: “One small step; triple the hope☀
  7. Call for volunteers: (if not included in the post already) a brief description of our current open volunteer positions and where viewers can find this. Please be sure to adjust the wording on each platform to reflect this accordingly:
    1. On Instagram: usually people are referred to our pinned posts
    2. On Facebook and LinkedIn: usually people are referred to our website
  8. Contact information: a basic list of how to contact us (email, website, phone number, etc.,)
  9. Hashtags: are detailed directly below!

The order of these sections may change from time to time and is ultimately up to your discretion for what would work best for the specific post, but generally sections 6-8 are always last and do not vary a whole lot between posts.

Hashtag Guidelines

  • The first hashtag must always be #ashahopeamanaki
  • Put the hashtags at the very bottom. They are key for engagement but may look cluttered and offer minimal information.
  • Put about 15-25 hashtags and try to maintain a good variety of hashtag types (e.g., event, nonprofit, community, location, trending)

Caption Examples

Below are some captions that were posted on different platforms. The sections described before are also noted, but please note that this is for the sake of clarity in this orientation document only—please do not include the section names in the final published caption.

FEEDBACK & COMMUNICATION

We encourage you to post your graphics and/or captions to the WhatsApp group chat if you want feedback. It is recommended that you post your caption for feedback at least a few hours before you are going to post to allow others the time to review it. Ultimately, you are responsible for deciding how to format and present your post; please use your own judgement to decide if others’ suggested changes would be appropriate.

Of course, this feedback also goes both ways. If you have any suggestions for how we could improve in any way, please don’t hesitate to message Ashwin privately or make a suggestion in the WhatsApp group chat!

END

We understand that this document is not all-encompassing of all you need to know on how to manage AHA’s Social Media platforms, but we hope it has served as a good introduction that will allow you to better grow here. As always, don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have to specific team members or the Social Media Team group chat on WhatsApp, no matter how trivial you think it is! Alternatively, you can submit your feedback anonymously through a Google Form linked here. Even seemingly trivial feedback like a typo, grammar mistake, broken link, etc., that you find in this document helps!

This is the first iteration of the Asha Hope Amanaki Social Media Orientation Document and we are continually striving to expand on and improve it as we figure it all out. Thank you for taking time out of your day to read it and, of course, in offering your precious time to volunteer for us here at Asha Hope Amanaki.

As of this document’s last update, when the schedule will be posted may be irregular, but we will try our best to get the schedule to you by Wednesday afternoon or evening; any updates will be communicated on WhatsApp. It will be posted as an embedded picture, a text message, or a link to the Content Calendar Template Google sheet.

You are responsible for the day of week you are assigned. (What day of the week you are assigned will depend on what you stated in your availability; it is most likely that you will be assigned the same weekday every week to accommodate for your schedule.) For example, if you are scheduled for Tuesday, post on Tuesday.

If you are unable to post on your scheduled day or want to be assigned a different weekday, please contact someone on the team ASAP and we will try to work around it. We will try to be as flexible as we can.

What time?

We recommend posting between 11am PST (/ 1pm CST / 2pm EST) and 1pm PST (/ 3pm CST / 4pm EST). Sometimes, there will be two posts scheduled in one day. In this case, it is best to not post both posts at the same time, and instead leave a gap of at least 4 to 5 hours between each post. For example, if you post your first post at 11am, it would be best to schedule your second post at 3pm or 4pm.

Whatever time you decide to post, please try your best to keep it consistent every week. For tips on how to post consistently, refer to the “Pre-scheduling Posts” section.

WHAT TO POST

Knowing what to post depends on knowing how to read the posting schedule. It will be sent in the WhatsApp “Social Media Team” group chat either as an image, text message, or a link to the Google Sheets.

Here is an example of a posting schedule:

  1. Main Colour: This communicates what the main colour of the post will be; it will usually be one (of three) of our brand colours. Please keep this in mind when designing Canva posts.
  2. Content Focus: This is the theme of the post. Please keep this in mind when creating the visuals or selecting pictures for the post.
  3. Description: This outlines the details of the purpose of the post. It also includes hashtags and templates you need to include, templates you need to use, as well as accounts you need to tag. Photos and templates are found on Canva under their respective folders (outlined in the “Folders” section). This info is also crucial in knowing what to write in the caption.
  4. Type: This details the type of post you need to make and the specific platforms you need to post it on. “All Platforms” indicates to post on all three platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn).
  5. Person in Charge: indicates who is responsible for post creation on that day
  6. Caption: This is where you will find the caption you need to include with your post.
    1. If it is included: Since the cell sizes are too small to view the whole caption, you must right-click the cell that is below your name, click “Copy,” then paste it in a separate word processing program or the social media platform itself to view the whole caption. Alternatively, on the left-hand side, there should be a link to a Google Doc which includes all the full captions, where you can find the caption you need for your assigned weekday.
    2. If it is not included/blank: You may need to write your own caption (or no caption is needed, but this is rarely the case). Please refer to the “Caption Guidelines” section on how to write effective captions.
  7. Additional Tasks: This section will include any details on additional tasks you need to do outside of the main post (if applicable), or if you are assigned a task that deviates from posting regularly (i.e., making a story or uploading a Reel).

COMMUNICATION

Because our volunteers are from all over the world, we primarily use WhatsApp to communicate. It is important to maintain a steady stream of communication on WhatsApp, especially if you are volunteering remotely.

You will be placed in a group called “Social Media Team.” Feel free to introduce yourself, state where you are from, or even include a fun fact about yourself. You are encouraged to reach out to this group chat or individual volunteers if you require any assistance or to discuss other matters. Some points on communicating:

  • Any instances of hate speech, discriminatory words, or otherwise harmful and ill-mannered language to any person or group will not be tolerated.
  • Feel free to keep your language as casual or formal as you are comfortable with!
  • Do not hesitate to form friendships with other volunteers
  • When addressing times (e.g., “I am going to post at 10am.”), please include at least one time zone label for clarity (e.g., “I am going to post at 10am EST/7am PST.”)
    • Additionally, please keep time zones in mind when waiting for replies. For example, if you message someone at 10pm PST, they may not reply until the following morning if they are living in EST (as 10pm PST is 1am EST)

Next we will learn how to make post.

Hi De’Johne, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Tell us a little about yourself to our readers?

My name is De’Johnes Jones and I am from New Orleans Los Angles California. I am currently completing my degree at Jackson State University in Sophomore Psychology and Biology with a Major in Pre-Medicine.

My hobbies include graphic design, reading, video gaming, and creative writing.

Are you a student volunteer or a corporate volunteer or a community volunteer?

I am a student volunteer with Asha Hope Amanaki.

Could you describe your volunteer role at Asha Hope Amanaki?

My role at AHA was Social Media Coordinator, and I volunteered with AHA for almost a year.

How did you find out about the Volunteer Opportunity?

I found it through our JSU Community Service Portal – GivePulse  when I was looking for service opportunities

How was your experience working with Asha Hope Amanaki and the volunteer opportunity in general?

My experience was amazing! I got extremely close with the team I worked with, so everything always ran smoothly!

Did volunteering on community projects help you in your job or career?

Due to the vast accumulation of hours I received at AHA, along with other various community service opportunities, I was able to receive over 200 community service hours, which will assist me in a multitude of disciplines. I also fostered valuable skills, such as social media literacy, graphic design, leadership and communication, etc.

Since you are virtual volunteer, what are your thoughts on Virtual vs InPerson opportunity?

The online format changed my volunteer experience because I was essentially working from home; I was able to provide meaningful impacts on the community without sacrificing my own comfort, and it also allowed me to do service on my own time.

He has started from simple things such as posting on our social media channels to creating the posts from scratch now. He is also our longest standing social media manager.

Hi Brendon, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Tell us a little about yourself to our readers?

My name is Brendon Bradford and I am from Chicago Illinois. I am currently completing my degree at Jackson State University in  Jackson Mississippi and after completing the final year, plan to move back to Chicago.

I used to play baseball so I like playing baseball in my free time. My favorite food would be chicken tenders. One of the things I like about Chicago are the summers! It is an excellent time to be there. I support the Chicago Cubs and catching game during summers is always there in the list.

Are you a student volunteer or a corporate volunteer or a community volunteer?

I am a student volunteer with Asha Hope Amanaki.

Could you describe your volunteer role at Asha Hope Amanaki?

As a social media manager, my primary role was to post regularly on the Social Media Channels such as LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. I post regularly on Turesday and I have been with the team since January 2023.

How did you find out about the Volunteer Opportunity?

I found it through our JSU Community Service Portal –  GivePulse and I liked this opportunity as I thought I could use my skills to help the organization grow.

How was your experience working with Asha Hope Amanaki and the volunteer opportunity in general?

My experience has been great, thanks to social media coordinator Juanita, who had been initially helping us with the captions and now we are doing our own captions too. We get to choose the day to post, one that works for us. We are not forced to post on that day only as things can change during the week.

Did volunteering on community projects help you in your job or career?

It has not yet helped me directly yet, but I expect it to help me in the future as I have gained a lot of experience in Graphic Design and it might help me get an opportunity at another company doing the same work.

Since you are virtual volunteer, what are your thoughts on Virtual vs InPerson opportunity?

Definitely I would love to work online than in person. This summer I completed a virtual internship and it added a lot of flexibility giving me the opportunity to move around, not stuck in one place, deciding my schedules etc. The biggest con is getting distracted as you can easily get comfortable.

We are excited to share with you all the wonderful moments and highlights from this year’s back-to-school event. As we reflect on this heartwarming occasion, we want to take you behind the scenes, showcasing the dedication, teamwork, and community spirit that made it all possible.

Key Highlights and Activities

This year’s back-to-school event was a resounding success, and there were several key highlights and activities that made it truly special. One of the highlights was our collaboration with Oregon’s Food Innovation Center. This partnerships allowed us to provide educational opportunities to children and families while also giving back to the community.

In addition to these collaborations, we distributed essential supplies such as backpacks and groceries to families in need. This support was crucial in helping families prepare for the upcoming school year and alleviating some of the financial burdens they face.

Furthermore, our event provided an amazing platform for volunteers to showcase their talents and products to the community, all while raising funds for our cause. It was a wonderful blend of creativity and generosity that truly embodies the spirit of Asha Hope Amanaki.

Inspiration Behind the Theme

The theme of this year’s back-to-school event was inspired by several factors close to our hearts. AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month served as a backdrop, reminding us of the diverse cultures and backgrounds that make our community vibrant. We wanted to honor this diversity and promote education as a means of unity and empowerment.

The event also aimed to support families with short-term groceries, ensuring that they have the resources they need to thrive. Additionally, we sought to ignite a passion for learning by offering educational experiences through food innovation tours. Finally, our dedication to community support was further fueled by our involvement in assisting the Maui fire relief efforts.

Behind-the-Scenes Insights

One of the most remarkable aspects of our event was the sense of unity and camaraderie among volunteers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Despite coming from different walks of life, everyone came together with open hearts and a shared goal: to make a positive impact on our community. New volunteers were welcomed with warmth and kindness, embodying the spirit of Asha Hope Amanaki.

The sight of volunteers unloading a U-Haul full of food and seamlessly organizing its distribution was nothing short of mesmerizing. It showcased the power of teamwork and the incredible impact it can have on our community. It was a true testament to what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.

Building Community and Connection

At Asha Hope Amanaki, we believe that events like this are instrumental in building a stronger sense of community and connection. By witnessing the support and care we provide to one another, attendees are inspired to become part of this ever-growing community. The event also offers a glimpse into the wealth of like-minded, giving individuals in our midst, further reinforcing the bonds that connect us.

Educational opportunities, such as access to museums, art, and various industries, offer attendees a chance to discover the world around them. These experiences invigorate a sense of community by fostering a deeper understanding of our shared interests and passions. We encourage everyone to spread the word and invite friends, families, students, and anyone who can contribute to making our community even stronger.

Interactive Activities and Games

Our event offered interactive activities that attendees eagerly looked forward to. For instance, lucky participants had the opportunity to step into the Food Innovation Center, where they got an exclusive look behind the scenes of their favorite food brands coming to life. From taste-testing rooms to a massive kitchen and a wall of successes, it was a captivating experience. This firsthand look at the journey from dream to reality left a lasting impression on all who ventured inside.

Local Businesses and Sponsors

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors and local businesses who played a pivotal role in supporting our event. Their involvement allowed attendees to connect on a deeper level, as it provided insight into their motivations, dreams, and commitment to community engagement. Through these interactions, attendees saw the human side of these businesses and sponsors, strengthening the sense of community.

The Takeaway Message

As we conclude this year’s back-to-school event, our hope is that attendees enjoyed their visit and will spread the word about the wonderful work we do at Asha Hope Amanaki. We encourage everyone to get involved, whether it’s by joining a cause dear to their hearts, creating products to sell or donate, or simply sharing the event with friends and family. Together, we can make the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time.

Thank you for being a part of our community, and we look forward to continuing our journey of hope, unity, and empowerment with all of you. Until next time, let’s keep spreading love and making a difference together!

Hi Sreyoshi, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Tell us a little about yourself to our readers(your town, your hobbies etc)?

My name is Sreyoshi Patra. I currently live in Portland, Oregon. I am from India. I relocated to the United States in 2018. So, it has been  nearly about five years now.

It’s nice, it’s beautiful. I was in Texas for three years; it was kind of hot there and now because I’ve moved to the Northwest it’s beautiful it’s green. I like the weather here.

During my free time I enjoy painting, cooking, and trying out new recipes. My favorite food is biryani. My favorite thing about Portland where I live right now is it’s so beautiful and green, especially during the spring and summer. I love the place here, so I guess it’s beautiful that’s what I like about Portland and what I love about my hometown I have family there.

Could you describe your volunteer role at Asha Hope Amanaki?

Absolutely. This is a beautiful question, I joined Asha Hope Amanaki in

January 2022. It has been about a year and a half now. I started working as a Social Media Manager, where I would coordinate social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. I did quite a few projects there and then I transitioned to more of a volunteer coordinator, and I coordinated projects more in the Portland area which has more to do with physical distribution or meeting people in person. Right now, my involvement has not been general like it used to be in the last six months ago.

I love working for Asha Hope Amanaki because I feel very connected with it. That was my role, I started as a Social Media Manager and now I work more like a volunteer coordinator.

How did you find out about the Volunteer Opportunity?

I found this beautiful opportunity in VolunteerMatch . It’s a platform where you can look for volunteer jobs and I think Ashwin posted this above this particular vacancy. They were looking for volunteers for a Social Media Manager or a Social Media Coordinator and then I applied online, and we got in touch over a phone call and then I was there.

How was your experience working with Asha Hope Amanaki and the volunteer opportunity in general?

I strongly believe that it was and is an incredible experience. It’s a rewarding experience for me. It provided me the opportunity to make some meaningful and impactful work. I got the opportunity to work with some truly dedicated professionals and dedicated individuals like Ashwin.

I really feel happy that I am able to contribute to a cause that I deeply care about like Asha Hope Amanaki is working for the underprivileged people in our community.  I really find it meaningful; I relate to the cause that they are working for. I think, deep down in my heart over the last 1 ½ years I was able to create a positive change in the lives of at least a couple of people. I really feel very happy and impactful, and I feel a sense of gratitude that I am able to contribute a little bit towards this organization and my community, so I’m really happy with that.

Did volunteering on community projects help you in your job or career?

Absolutely. This is a great question. I think the most important part, the  most important change that I have seen after working at Asha Hope  Amanaki, was that it has helped me grow as an individual, it has helped  me grow as a person. I met some truly wonderful people here and I came  here because I transitioned from working as a Social Media Coordinator to  a Volunteer Coordinator where I would meet people in person.

I still remember the happiness on the faces of the coordinators when I dropped off origami for the International Day of Older People, I think it was in October. The happiness on their faces, I got in contact with a couple of them. The happiness on their faces was just heart-touching, my heart was filled with gratitude. It was filled with contentment and fulfillment. It has a personal connection, I am not talking about future internships or job prospects because I was working as a Social Media Manager first, and I entered the HR background, of course nowadays nothing works in silos, but more than professionally I’m talking about jobs or internships or college admissions it had to do with my personal growth.

I was able to sharpen my skills, meet new people, and visit those old-age community centers. They would send photographs of them sharing origami with older people. It was a beautiful experience right from the beginning – collecting origami from our volunteers at Asha Hope Amanaki. To distributing it to volunteers who work with cloth and drop off the origami to the community centers, to actually getting photographs from them and then I also got to coordinate a visit with a couple of them here in Portland which is very near to my place, so it was a beautiful experience. There was a time I got to take a picture with a couple of them, it was beautiful. It has to do more with my personal growth and with my life.

What motivated you to volunteer?

This is a personal story. I was waiting for my work permit in the US, and I had a baby, he was 3 months old. I felt like I was missing out on something. I really wanted to make good use of my time because I was there at home, my husband was working, and I was taking care of the baby. There was a time that I felt I needed to do something for me. I wanted to do something meaningful so that I could give back to the community, to contribute to a creative cause, while focusing on myself as an individual at the same time. To create something meaningful and impactful was my main motivation, and then at the same time to brush up on some of my skills that I had. This is coming out of a nutshell and reaching towards a few people every week. Then I got in touch, I was lucky that I could volunteer, and I could come onboard for Asha Hope Amanaki. I got the chance to meet with Ashwin to talk to him and I’m happy to be working toward a problem or helping the underprivileged.

The difference that I was making in the community was a big motivational factor for me. The positive impact that I was able to create whether by putting up a post on social media relating to a fundraiser for victims of the flood that took place. Whether it was the International Day of Older People distributing the origami to them. So those are all small, tiny bits that really give me a sense of happiness, and this happiness motivates me to do more. So, these are my efforts, and two main reasons why I chose to volunteer especially with Asha Hope Amanaki.

How did online format change your volunteer experience?

It was nice, I mean I did not feel any difference personally because that  was my first volunteer experience. That was the first time I got into  volunteering. Meeting people online was a great experience and then  talking about online volunteering I was handling the social media platforms. I got to learn many things, I got to learn how to choose hashtags, and what kind of hashtags to use to create more publicity for your cause, what time to post so you can get the maximum number of views for a post. These are some very small things which actually make a lot of difference. I learned how to use Canva, it was a beautiful and very useful tool that everybody should know how to use. So, because the online experience was very fruitful for me and I personally did not feel much of the difference, it was the same condition that I felt meeting with people, it was the same sense of responsibility I felt that time to deliver when I was asked to do a task. It was not much of a difference between online and in-person volunteering.

What would you say was the most memorable moment volunteering for Asha Hope Amanaki?

I still remember this will always be a very special memory to me, I cannot recall the name of the community center, but I went to drop off origami at a senior living center here in Portland, I met the volunteer over there who was coordinating with us on receiving the number of origamis, where to drop off and stuff like that. When I met her, she was so happy. It was an office, all the staff all the employees were working there, they came up to me to say thank you. You know, a small piece of origami, a small piece of paper that people were folding was an art. When I went to drop them off the way they greeted me was so warm and I felt like I had a very big job. I felt so great and touched that this was something that I was not expecting. I just went there with the hope that I would be dropping off the origami. The person who was there in charge, the person who was coordinating, the lady was sharing the origami with their residents, the senior people there. It was there that she handed over a duck, it was a duck folded origami to a senior person who was sitting there. He was so happy and then he asked me – What is this, what is the meaning of this, why are you giving me an origami? I felt so good explaining to him that was why we are giving out origami.

So that is a beautiful memory that I had during my whole experience with Asha Hope Amanaki. I still have the photographs. Whenever I see it, I’m like wow. They were like okay can I take a picture with you? Then you take a photograph of the origami – okay you hold one origami – and I will hold one and then can you please take a picture for me? It was a beautiful experience there. [laughs] I was living in the moment

Finding an organization that philanthropically distributes all its profits to charities is a breath of fresh air in a world where enterprises are primarily motivated by monetary pursuits. Food for Thought LLC is one such special establishment. They choose a deserving nonprofit each month and donate all of their earnings to further that organization’s admirable goals. The Hillsboro based nonprofit committed to strengthening disadvantaged children, Asha Hope Amanaki, is in the limelight this month. Let’s examine Food for Thought LLC’s outstanding work and their impact.

Food for Thought LLC has reimagined the standard restaurant concept on the basis of the idea that cuisine and philanthropy can coexist. They handcraft, in small batches, delectable food items inspired from the western region of India and sell these at local grocery stores and Farmer’s Markets. Their flagship product is Shrikhand, a yogurt based Indian dessert.

With key focus on quality and sustainability, they responsibly try to source their ingredients from local vendors in the pacific northwest. Their customers get to satisfy their sweet cravings, and the money raised from their sales are donated to charitable organizations which are working at a grass root level. This is a great example of effective altruism and win- win -win for the customer, Food For Thought and the beneficiary of the charitable donation.

Food for Thought’s mission is to support causes that are working on children’s education, women’s empowerment, social justice and equality, nature conservation, and health and wellbeing. They have decided to support Asha Hope Amanaki this month with the aim of supporting marginalized children as well as spreading awareness about this amazing NGOs work. Any non-profit work of this nature requires helping hands and the same applies to Food for Thought LLC. This is a 100% volunteer run organization. All volunteers at Food for Thought LLC donate their time and talents to this non-profit operation.

Food for Thought LLC is aware of how crucial community engagement is to building a just and sustainable society. In addition to their regular contributions, they actively participate in their neighborhood by planning fundraisers, volunteer activities, and awareness campaigns. In order to encourage people to embrace the idea of giving back, Food for Thought LLC works to cultivate a feeling of community and shared responsibility. Their monetary donations in 2022 was upwards of $9000 and in the first half of 2023 alone, their impact has exceeded $9000.

This is an outstanding organization that personifies giving back. They not only give crucial resources to deserving NGOs like Asha Hope Amanaki, but they also motivate others to do business in a socially conscious manner. Customers at Food for Thought LLC may appreciate knowing that their donation supports a deserving cause with each delectable item they purchase. Let’s acknowledge and support Food for Thought LLC’s goal of spreading kindness in the world, one dish at a time.

For your nonprofit, maximize Google Workspace’s potential. Discover the many advantages, such as low costs, simplified collaboration, increased output, and strong security. Learn how Google Workspace may assist your business in achieving its goals and bringing about positive societal impact.

A nonprofit functions exactly like a traditional one and has to use the same kinds of resources for its staff to interact, communicate, and produce. Although there are numerous solutions accessible to organisations, Google Workspace, generally known as Google’s G Suite, is still the finest. Multiple connected applications are included in Google Workspace to simplify, streamline, and speed up users’ day-to-day work lives.

Let’s first understand what G Suite is. G Suite is a collection of linked tools that work together to keep your business running efficiently. These tools include Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Google Forms, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides.

With the aid of G Suite, you may classify the files into groups depending on projects, campaigns, teams, partnerships, and more. Assigning various levels of access to certain individuals of your organisation, such as the ability to view or change these files, is also possible.

Working on the same files seamlessly and simultaneously with others is one of the distinctive advantages of G Suite. You can also see the icons for the users who are now viewing or editing a particular file. Google connect in particular encourages cooperation by enabling you to virtually connect with others while browsing files on the Drive together.

The affordability of Google Workspace is among its many benefits for charity organisations. Google provides significant savings, as well as free licences for qualified nonprofits. This suggests that nonprofit organizations are able to fully utilize Google’s productivity solutions while staying under their strict budgetary limits. Nonprofits can concentrate their resources more effectively to their main objective by doing away with the requirement for pricey infrastructure and software licences.

Benefits of using G-drive as non-profit

Since nonprofit organisations frequently deal with a significant volume of files and papers, efficient file management and collaboration are crucial to their success. The advantage of using GDrive for non-profit NGO is that it is free and you can keep all of your files including Word and Excel in the same place. It keeps all the files organised.

Similar to other cloud file systems, GDrive enables you to access your files from any location by signing into your Google account. It also makes it simple to share your files, keeps them secure, and backs them up for you. We can also share the doc with the team member and give them access to either edit or add a comment on the document.

Version control and document revision tracking are frequently necessary for nonprofits, especially when working on projects with several participants. The extensive version control features offered by Google Drive enable users to follow changes made to files over time. Additionally, it maintains a thorough revision history that enables users to go back to earlier versions as needed. By ensuring responsibility, correctness, and openness in document collaboration, this feature reduces the possibility of confusion or mistakes brought on by working with out-of-date versions.

Given the delicate nature of their job and the privacy of donor data, data security is of the utmost importance for NGOs. With strong safeguards in place to protect nonprofit information, Google Drive places a high priority on security and data protection.  Nonprofits can also control access to their data by defining permissions and using Google’s sophisticated security features, like two-step verification, to ensure that only authorized individuals have access to critical information.

Benefits of using G-sheet as non-profit

In order to make wise decisions and assess their impact, nonprofit organisations largely rely on precise data management and analysis. A number of features in Google Sheets, a cloud-based spreadsheet program included in Google Workspace, are especially useful for charitable organisations.

You can build complex spreadsheets with Google Sheets, a powerful cloud-based program. Your most crucial data can be shared, organised, and analysed using Google Sheets. The capacity to manage incredibly big projects and data sets because of its integration, seamless collaborative capability, and other advantages make Google Sheets superior to Excel.

Sheets offers a variety of collaboration options, from asynchronous collaboration—where team members work separately and primarily at various times in the same file—to real-time simultaneous collaborative editing. With asynchronous editing, you can give individuals assignments that they can mark finished after they are finished, and you can use the comment tool to let them know about queries or concerns.

Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Docs are all seamlessly integrated with Google Sheets and the rest of the Google Workspace. By saving time, nonprofits can import data from Gmail or Google Forms directly into Google Sheets. Furthermore, NGOs can integrate Google Sheets into Google Docs or Google Sites to build dynamic reports, dashboards, or interactive web pages that update immediately with the most recent data. Collaboration is improved, workflows are streamlined, and data consistency is guaranteed across numerous platforms thanks to this connectivity.

Benefits of using G-photos as non-profit

In order to express their story, interact with their audience, and highlight their effect, nonprofit organisations frequently create and publish visual content. The cloud-based photo and video storage service Google Photos has a number of advantages designed especially for NGOs.

The cloud can be used by nonprofits to upload and store high-quality pictures and movies, doing away with the need for local servers or physical storage devices. Nonprofits may make sure their priceless media assets are safely kept and easily available whenever needed by using automatic backup and synchronisation across devices. Powerful search tools are also available in Google Photos, enabling users to locate particular photos or videos using keywords, dates, or visual content.

Nonprofits can effectively express their mission and impact by using visual storytelling. Create albums, collages, animations, or slideshows are just a few of the capabilities that Google Photos offers to improve visual storytelling. Nonprofits may create captivating narratives using their greatest images and videos that engage their audience and clearly communicate their message. Nonprofits can use Google Photos’ user-friendly editing tools and artistic elements to bring their stories to life, evoking feelings and motivating action.

Social media channels are frequently used by nonprofits to expand their audience and spread their message. Sharing visual information directly from the Google Photos interface is simple because to Google Photos’ seamless integration with well-known social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The necessity to download and re-upload media files to each platform might waste time for nonprofits. By streamlining the posting of photos and videos, this integration makes it easier for NGOs to interact with their followers and supporters.

Benefits of using G-form as non-profit

As responses are submitted, Google Forms analyses and compiles them. You may view results both individually and collectively, and the charts are easy to read. Google Forms is the way to go if you want to hear from funders, volunteers, or other constituencies but the more expensive solutions are out of your price range.

This is a fantastic place to start for organisations without a reliable constituent database. To have a location to gather data about community members and their requirements, add a Google Form link to your website or include it in your front-desk procedure. You can open the results in a spreadsheet in Google Forms in addition to having the response data summarised. Although it shouldn’t be your main database, this is a good place to start.

Nonprofits may easily design bespoke surveys and data collecting forms with Google Forms because of its user-friendly interface. With the help of a range of question kinds, such as multiple-choice, text, and rating scales, nonprofits can quickly create forms that seem professional. By matching the form’s design to their organisation’s visual identity, organisations can increase professionalism and brand consistency.

Unlocking Growth and Success

In both personal and professional journeys, having guidance and support from experienced individuals can make a world of difference. Mentor-mentee programs have emerged as invaluable platforms that facilitate this exchange of wisdom, knowledge, and support. These programs connect mentors, individuals with expertise and experience, with mentees seeking guidance and growth opportunities. This blog explores the numerous benefits of mentor-mentee programs and why they are worth embracing.

1. Knowledge and Experience Transfer:

One of the primary benefits of mentor-mentee programs is the transfer of knowledge and experience. Mentors, with their years of industry expertise, can provide invaluable insights, share best practices, and offer guidance on navigating challenges. This transfer of knowledge helps mentees acquire practical skills, gain industry-specific insights, and learn from real-world experiences, thereby accelerating their personal and professional growth.

2. Personal and Professional Development:

Mentor-mentee relationships create fertile ground for personal and professional development. Mentors act as role models and provide guidance on setting goals, developing effective strategies, and making informed decisions. They can help mentees identify their strengths, and areas for improvement, and chart a path for growth. Mentors’ constructive feedback fosters self-awareness and confidence, propelling mentees toward achieving their full potential.

3. Networking and Connections:

Another significant advantage of mentor-mentee programs is the opportunity to expand one’s professional network. Mentors often have extensive networks within their industries or organizations. By having a mentor, mentees gain access to these networks, opening doors to new opportunities, introductions to key stakeholders, and potential collaborations. The mentor’s endorsement and guidance can enhance the mentee’s credibility and increase their visibility within the industry.

4. Enhanced Decision-Making Skills:

Mentor-mentee relationships cultivate critical thinking and decision-making skills. Mentors can provide a different perspective on challenges and help mentees evaluate different options. Through thought-provoking discussions and guidance, mentors encourage mentees to consider diverse viewpoints, weigh the pros and cons, and make informed decisions. This nurtures mentees’ ability to think analytically, make sound judgments, and adapt to dynamic environments.

5. Personal Support and Encouragement:

Mentor-mentee relationships extend beyond professional development. Mentors often become trusted confidants, offering emotional support, encouragement, and motivation. Mentees can share their aspirations, fears, and concerns in a safe and non-judgmental space. Mentors, drawing from their own experiences, provide guidance, reassurance, and practical advice, helping mentees navigate personal challenges while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Mentor-mentee programs have the power to transform lives and careers by fostering growth, development, and personal connections. The guidance, knowledge transfer, and support provided by mentors contribute to the mentees’ personal and professional success. Whether you are a seasoned professional seeking to give back or an aspiring individual eager to learn and grow, embracing mentor-mentee programs can unlock opportunities. So, let us embrace these programs, nurture relationships, and together, create a thriving community of lifelong learners and mentors.
